We were proud to learn that one of our Labradors was at the World Trade Center working as a Crisis Intervention Dog. Coulee Creek's Katy-Did-It and her owner/trainer/handler, Pat Dickinson, worked with the Red Cross at the Family Assistance Center at Pier 94, New York City. Their tasks were several:(1)To assist the mental health counselors at pier 94.(2)To accompany family members of the victims to ground zero. (3) To walk the perimeter of ground zero and visit firefighters and police personnel at rest stations there and at St. John's University, two blocks away. Their classification is "Mental Health-Animal Assisted Crisis Response". Pat reports that Kate is one of the first four dogs working for the Red Cross in this capacity. She was a four footed comedian for those who needed a few moments of levity and a stoic companion for others. Pat very kindly and modestly says, "It was an honor to hold the end of Kate's leash." Click HERE for the Red Cross article Pat has been deeply involved in Therapy Dog training through the Delta Society. Her two Coulee Creek Labs, Kate the yellow and Bonnie the chocolate, are both certified "Delta Society Pet Partners" and both have had the advanced "Animal Assisted Crisis Response Training." |
